staceyscott.jpg   Prof. Stacey Scott, Director

Dr. Scott is an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the University of Guelph and Adjunct Associate Professor in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. She is also a Member of Waterloo's Games Institute. Her background is in human-computer interaction, computer-supported collaboration, and computer science. Her research focuses on developing technologies that enhance human-human interaction in computer-supported work and casual environments. She specializes in the design of digital tabletop computer systems  for a wide variety of application domains, including tabletop gaming, military command and control, and emergency response.

Postdoctoral Fellows

This could be you!  If you are a highly motivated graduating or recently graduated PhD student with expertise in the areas of HCI, Surface Computing, and/or Information Visualization, are great with people, and are seeking a Postdoctoral position, please see the CSL Positions Available page for current funded positions. If you have your own funding, please contact CSL Director, Dr. Stacey Scott ( stacey.scott@uoguelph.ca).

Current Graduate Students

        Leila.jpgLeila Homaeian
Leila is a PhD candidate in Systems Design Engineering.
JohnCSL.jpgJohn Harris (PhD)
John is a PhD student working with the University of Waterloo Games Institute under Professors Mark Hancock and Stacey Scott. He received a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Calgary and a Bachelors of Applied Science in Mechatronics Engineering from the University of Waterloo. John's work focuses on designing asymmetric games that engage with and appeal to multiple different types of players simultaneously. (Think grandparents with grandchildren, physical therapists with their patients, and action gamers with strategy enthusiasts). He is currently studying various forms of asymmetry in games (such as asymmetries of challenge, interface, responsibility, and information) and how designing games around these deliberate imbalances between players can actually help bring people together.
This could be you!  If you are a highly motivated student with expertise or interest in the areas of HCI, Information Visualization, and/or the use of technology to improve animal health and welfare, and are not afraid of hard (but very interesting!) work please see the CSL Positions Available page for current funded graduate positions.

Marvin Pafla (Visiting Student from University of Konstanz, Germany)
Marvin is an undergraduate student pursuing a joint honours degree in Computer Science and Psychology at the University of Konstanz in Konstanz, Germany. Marvin completed a 1-year academic exchange in Computer Science at the University of Guelph, where he met Dr. Scott. He did a part-time URA helping with Mojgan Ghare's Master's thesis research investigating Proxemics and Visual Conative Modes in the design of interactive public displays in the Winter 2017. In Summer 2017, he conducted follow-up research for his undergraduate honours thesis on exploring the concept of mitigating potential social embarrassment in public display interactions. He is continuing this work back in Germany at the moment, but will be back in the Summer of 2018 to conduct further studies in this area. He is also a competitive handball player in Germany.
